Guess who just showed up? I just reviewed my contract and Columbus Day isn't in there. I guess I'd better revise that.
Back to work! Homework be damned!
I understand 1492 was a big year for you. HUGE. Although, if you want to get technical - you didn't actually discover America.
But let's not get technical.
I would like to thank you, because we celebrate falsely in your honor that the military gets a day off. The bonus for doing day care for military parents is that I get a day off. A day that I could really, really use.
So thank you Columbus, for sailing the ocean blue in 1492. I'm willing to forget about all the smallpox and genocide, if just for one day.
(I'm kidding)
It feels as if summer is over in San Diego. September 3rd was crazy hot and humid and it was like on September 4th, it broke. The nights are definitely cooler and the air feels like it's time for a season change. In San Diego, our weather ranges from hot to less hot to freezing and if you're not from these parts, it's certainly bizarre.
In any case, I'm happy for the weather change. Spring and Fall are my two favorite seasons so I'm a happy girl. Things just feel different, like changing for the better and I like that optimism. I got an A- in my PSY class; my late paper only cost me 2 points! Talked with my elusive counselor and I am on track to graduate next year. Ya'll are invited to the party!!! I'm going to be doing backflips, I swear. I'm re-reviewing my CLEP books testing out of my lower division within 2 weeks. 12 units at $160 vs $3,000!!! I think that's a good plan. I'm still bummed about my GPA. When I had my surgery, I didn't know that I could take a medical leave of absence from school and not lose my financial aid, so two weeks after surgery (pleurisy and all) I was shuffling my way to classes and failed two. BOOO. Bah, my 3.5 GPA was now in the toilet and despite all my best efforts, it doesn't seem to want to budge. Bah.
So with my schooling under control, the fact remains that I need to A) get out of debt and B) Find financial aid for culinary school. B is proving harder than A, but I'm optimistic that I'll be able to do it. I believe that I'll be able to do it. No sweat.
So Mrs. Peel, UK in January looks like a no =( I'm sorry but I was all set and then I looked at the bills and my heart sank. You'll see me after I Graduate at this point!
The daycare isn't going too hot. I need some full time children, and I've put advertisements everywhere, but still nothing. I did a drop in for a 1 month old and a 2 year old and it was a lot of fun, but dammit I need more kids!! I've even done some web advertisements (hello Craigslist!) which yielded some results, but more than a few crazies so I don't know what to do at this point. I'll let the children come to me and focus on the Thanksgiving bake sale. I love that it's that time already!
We're finished!
Being a food vendor is a lot of hard work and the past week has been AMAZING. We actually made a profit! I'm so stoked! We did pretty well for first timers, but compared to what everyone else was making daily...eh. I don't want to think about it. I'll chalk it up to the experience being enough and that I know what to do next time.
I do know that I'm probably going to sit on the couch all day tomorrow, in my underpants, with my xbox, nursing my sunburned face.
Yes, I got a sunburn. No, it's not bright red. I look like I've gotten about 3 shades darker and my face hurts. I can't even lay on the pillow, it smarts so bad. Aloe Vera to the rescue, and I'm totally cursing my grandfather's name for this one.
In any case, back to the hustle. After a quick break of course =) It appears I've got loads of entries to read!
I hate these. I always get them when I'm really nervous. It feels like there''s a train sitting on my chest and I have this massive urge to cry...
It 4 hours until our big sale, and I'm really nervous. I hope everyone likes the food, and I hope that we sell out. We've spent so much time and money on this project that if it fails, we'll be in a really bad spot. I mean really, really bad. I just remembered that we didn't buy drinks to sell! OMG how do we have food and no drinks!
In any case, I'd normally call Daniel to freak out over the phone and since we're no longer --- well anyway I'm freaking out here.
I'm going to go do deep breaths somewhere...I won't have any internet down at the base I won't be as posting as often.
So I'm waiting for the State Social Services: Licensing Division to get here. We're being inspected today for our childcare license. Meaning I get to stay home days, work at Apple two/three nights a week and have a bit more flexibility with school and catering.
It's a win-win situation. It's a good thing I like kids. Well, other people's kids.
I grew up in a Child Care home. My mom did it fore 15 years before she decided that she wanted to get her Bachelor's in Accounting. Get back out in the workforce. She hates the workforce now, LOL. Since we are going to be doing 24/7 care, I handle the day and she'll do nights and weekends. It works. I know it's hard work, but I remember how fun it is. Children are amazing, especially when they're 2-5 years old and they are developing those personalities.
The little girl I watched last month, Corey was five and she was so cute. Everything was new to her and she was excited about everything. My favorite thing of hers was how she would try to get something she wanted. Like so:
"Miss Ceji, do you like strawberries?"
"Yes, Corey, I love strawberries"
"I like strawberries too Miss Ceji"
"That's good"
"Miss Ceji, can I have some strawberries?"
She would do that with everything; food, clothes, movies, games. She never changed tactics, always the same one. In any case, it was fun to play along.
I won't even mention how well Child Care pays. I've seen some people who do it just for the money, and they are the WORST Child Care providers ever. Disgusting conditions, overcrowed. Kids sleep on the floor. I don't even want to go into it.
But I do know that I'm excited. I had the entire family whipping the house into shape late until last night. Carpets got cleaned at 7:30am today. It looks damn good.
Hopefully, I'll have good news in the next hour or two =)
GOOD NEWS: We just got our license!!!! Yay!!!
Today, the boys were discussing Star Wars and giving each other names based on characters. I casually (or so I thought) mentioned that I have never actually seen Star Wars. I've seen parts of the film, but I always fall asleep. I did see the Phantom Menace but I got irritated and took a $10 nap. I do know a majority of the cultural references because -- well I hang out with nerds.
Major freakout time. Even customers got into the mix, wondering how on earth I could have never seen Star Wars. How could I have not seen Star Wars and I wanted to major in Film? It didn't make sense!
So after all the commotion died, Oscar suggests the name "Jawa" and everyone starts laughing. He explains it's because I'm short and sometimes squeak when I'm nervous. Hmmm. "What's a Jawa?" I ask.
Hello. I work at Apple part-time. I'm what they call a Mac Specialist.
It's a fancy word for "salesperson".
I just feel the need to let all of you friendly shoppers out there know something. When I ask if you need some help, I'm not trying to force you to buy everything you touched. I'm not trying to "make more money". For the record: Apple employees are not on commission. We get paid the same whether we sell 100 computers, or none. We employees are honestly big fans of the Apple brand, so we like to make sure that everyone has a chance to ask questions even if you think it's a stupid question (it's not).
We also like to dispel Apple myths, rumours, or downright lies: our personal favorite is the iPhone nano, and the limited-edition "Yellow Submarine" Beatles iPod. We'd also really appreciate it if you didn't come in the store proclaiming that you hate "all things Apple", then proceed to spend another 45 minutes checking your e-mail on the computers while listening to your iPod. Oh yeah, that iPod? Apple product. Just in case you weren't aware.
The Photo Booth application on our computers is awesome isn't it? I'd just like to point out that it's not a "MySpace Photo Booth" so please leave your makeup bags and hair extensions at home. Other people would like to have a look at the computers too. And its really hard to get glitter lipgloss out of the keyboards.
Oh yeah: there are a grand total of 5 women who work in my store. Of those 5, one is a Mac Genius, one is our Business Specialist and the last 3 are Mac Specialists. We find it very insulting when you side-step us when we offer to help you, and run to the next male person you see. We try not to take it personal, but hey it's kind of hard. But just watch when you ask the male Mac Specialists a question they can't answer. They come right to us. (Sometimes, we know more than them. Sorry!)
So please try to remember the above the next time you're in the store. We'd make fun of you after you leave a lot less if you did. Thanks!
We sold our last 4 iPhones at 9 this morning! We're completely sold out!
I'm telling you, I'm seriously loving this product. It kind of sucks though; we got so much training and none of us sales people got to actually hold/touch/caress the iPhone until about an hour before you did. There's been a lot of demos going on - i.e. we play with the phone while you stand around and watch us- because it's really hard to answer questions and actually show you how it works if us Mac Specialists can't do it ourselves.
It's still pretty fricking sweet though. I could play with it all day and not get bored. A few probs I see with the phone are:
1. The touch pad only works with your finger pads. You can't use a stylus, acrylic nails or any other pointy object to type or tap anything. It's especially hard for those of us with big thumbs; it takes a bit of getting used to. In Safari mode, you can tilt the phone longways - it gives you a bit more room to type out, but you can't do that in SMS mode and that's a bit poor.
2. The front of the iPhone gets a bit messy, and if there's anything on it you kind of have to tap a bit harder than you should. We sell the protective film covers and they work great so you should probably get those for your iPhone. I have the LG Chocolate phone, and the same thing pretty much happens on my touch pad as well. Any face sweat, hand gunk or anything and the touch sensor pad doesn't work very good. Protective film cover FTW!
3. After a while, I noticed that the iPhone gets very hot. Not hot enough to burn, but hot enough to be like "Hey, why is this so hot?" sort of thing. I don't know if it's because we have hundreds of people coming in to play with it daily, but it was kind of strange. Hopefully it is because it gets handled by hundreds of people and not some kind of battery defect (iPods, anyone?)
All in all, it's a pretty sweet project and it's awesome to be a part of something so cool. I only hope the launch of Leopard in October is as much fun as this was.
Today we released the iPhone and OMFGZ. I've never had so much fun at work, ever.
I can't really go into too much detail, but if you can please get down to your nearest Apple store, and just play with one. You'll fall in love.
I had convinced myself that I didn't need one, but rest assured I'm totally getting one as soon as my contract with Verizon is up! And besides, I need a quad band phone for doing...whatever it is quad band phones do, haha. Also, I wonder who is going to be the carrier in the UK and EU starting next year. T-Mobile, Orange or Vodaphone? Hmm.
Thank you Apple, for a day full of fun and hilarity. Go iPhone!
